The security issue is an XSS exploit discovered by Jeremias Reith that fortunately only affects IP-based virtual servers running on Apache 2.x.

You should always keep your webapp up-to-date. You don’t want to wake up one morning just to find your site full of pharma spam and hidden links, do you? That would be awful

For those who are interested in security you should definitely check out sla.ckers.org. I’ve read some real gems over there when related to webapp security and it has inspired me before to write some posts. This time, I found something I just had to share with you guys. Don’t worry, I contacted maluc (the original author of the post) to get permission to post his stuff over here.

When it comes to test a captcha and it’s weakness, you always need to have a large sample to work with. If you’re planning to train or write an OCR engine, it’s always useful and sometimes needed to have several samples to play with.

I’m going to start by posting this code to extract a large sample of Yahoo! captchas:

This script will download and save to the /yahoo/ subfolder a sample of 1000 captchas. If you want to get more or less captchas, just edit the $end variable.

He even took some inital anotations for those interested in this particular captcha:

When trying to decide if a page is Spam, it is helpful to ask yourself this question: If I remove the scraped (copied) content, the ads, and the links to other pages, is there anything of value left? If the answer is no, the page is probably Spam.

Google Bowling + DDoS = Pwnage!

Guess you all know about the ongoing controversy about someone abusing Eli’s tool QUIT and a DDoS against BlueHatSeo.com. For what I’ve read I think somebody is pissed with Eli because his blog is disclosing too much information (?). Who knows what is the real motive… But this made me realize that no matter how good it seems things are going for your sites and rankings… You can NEVER get to comfy.

I know a DDoS may not seem that bad; Your sites goes offline, you burn all your bandwdith and after a couple of days your back online… right?

Well, maybe.. But what if the perpetrator of the DDoS decides to take it one step further… Like a DDoS + Google Bowling attack:

That’s right, it would be a fatality. A long-lasting DDoS attack and some Google Bowling that results on de-indexing could be the worst nightmare of your site… And if it’s executed correctly, there is no going back for your site… Ever.
Now if you want to make it suck even more, add to it some hacking and some imagination.

Four months into the year and I’m already convinced that 2008 is going to be a really interesting year for black hat seo.

Wordpress

Some of us love it, some of us hate it… Either way this blogging platform supposedly powers 0.8% of the internets. Whether you use it for blog farms, for parasite hosting or for scraper sites, I think most of the industry doesn’t realize the real power of Wordpress. (And those who do realize it, make a killing of it)

Hacking

As David Naylor mentioned it, nowadays black hat seo’s/hackers are starting to realize the potential of hacking/search engine optimization. Let’s think about this for a minute, imagine that a hackers gets a into your server and instead of defacing your site like old-school hackers… They decide to monetize from their intrusion. How? Well… I could think of a couple of ways:
1. Contacting your competition (Assuming they didn’t hired the hacker in the first place) and get paid to change your robots.txt or filling your site with spyware to drop you from the serps results.
2. Adding links to their sites for link juice.
3. Altering your ad code to steal clicks/conversions. (A simple preg_match could change the Google AdSense’s code of all the sites on a server)
Proxy Sites

Not so new, but I’ve seen this technique being used more and more each day. Read more about it here and here. Basically you use proxy sites to generate duplicated content of a site… And Google is not too fond about duplicated content

Botnets

I love them, and they are probably the most black hat thing out there right now. I’m not going to elaborate on this one, but some really really shady things can be accomplished with this monsters.

For all those hungry for keywords, check out my free keyword tool.

My tool will scrape for you keywords from Google Suggest, SpyFu, Google Adwords, Yahoo Search Marketing and other shady keyword sources… Then it will remove dupes and invalid keywords, and print it everything as comma separated values (csv).

Here is an excerpt of the output generated for blackhat seo:

Caffeinated Content for Wordpress

My friend kansieo was kind enough to hook me up with a copy of Caffeinated Content for Wordpress.

According to his site, this Wordpress plugin allows you to create content for an entire Wordpress blog with the click of a button. Having a tool like this would come really in handy if you need content for a blogfarm or just a brand new blog, so let’s give it a try.

I’m going to test it on [labs.getyacg.com] (This is just a Wordpress blog I use to test stuff)

Installation is pretty straight forward, similar to any other Wordpress plugin:
1. Upload it to /wp-content/plugins/
2. Activate it on the Plugins tab
3. Go to the Options tab, and fill in the required information (Email, key…)
4. Now you can use it from the Manage tab
For testing purposes I decided to use made-for-adsense and black hat seo as my keywords.

Before creating a batch of new posts, take a look at the /templates/ folder. There you will be able to change the look and feel of the posts and comments. Here is an example of a template file:

As you can see, it’s pretty straight forward. This template will produce a post similar to this one:

So far so good, so let’s proceed to create a new batch of posts!

In the Caffeinated Content tab you have several different options that let you alter the look of the new posts… But I’m going to leave everything as it is, so I just have to type the keyword (black hat seo) and the date range of the posts (01/06/07 - 01/01/08).

Voilà! It took a couple of minutes and now I have over 50 new posts related to made-for-adsense and black hat seo! And the best is yet to come, besides just creating a new post, this plugin will also create comments for each post. Take a look at one of the posts and comments about black hat seo over here.

And that’s not it, with the aid of markov chains this plugin will also create themed unique content for your blog.

On my opinion I think that kansieo did a great job with this powerful yet easy-to-use plugin for Wordpress… So go ahead and secure your copy right now at [kansieo.com]

It’s basically a PHP Forum Spammer, pretty useful to get some backlinks to your sites. With some coding skills you could include this into your YACG sites to automatically generate backlinks. Now if you really want to make something impressive, integrate into your sites this daily keywords hook and his PHP Forum Spammer… Your sites would grow naturally as well as the backlinks.
